What Is a SMETA Audit and Why It Matters for Your Clothing Brand

A factory audit can support a buyer’s due diligence, but only if the report identifies the site intended for the order. A logo, a factory photograph and an audit document for a different company should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.

What SMETA is—and is not

SMETA is Sedex’s social-audit methodology for assessing conditions at a worksite. It is not certification, and the methodology does not issue a pass or fail. The findings and corrective-action process matter more than a generic “audited factory” label. See Sedex’s explanation of audit status.

Check the scope of the actual report

SMETA audits assess Labour Standards and Health & Safety. A four-pillar scope adds Environment and Business Ethics. Buyers should verify which scope the specific report covers rather than assume that all four pillars were assessed. Sedex describes the two- and four-pillar scope.

Keep NEWCOM’s supplied documents separate

The supplied production profile identifies Qingyuan Ziqiangwei Clothing Co., Ltd. The separately available SMETA 2-pillar report, dated 3 April 2026 and referenced ZAA600195050, identifies Qingyuan Shenxiansheng Fashion Co., Ltd. These are different legal entities. A report for one does not automatically cover the other, NEWCOM’s Guangzhou contact office or every possible production site.

A buyer’s audit-document checklist

• Match the legal entity, address and operating site to the proposed production order.
• Check the audit date, reference, scope and the party issuing the report.
• Review the findings, corrective-action plan and available follow-up evidence.
• Ask your buyer or retailer which documents and review process it requires.
• Keep social-audit evidence separate from fabric composition, product tests and garment quality checks.

From evidence to an order decision

Confirm where the garments will be made before interpreting an audit as evidence for the order. Agree the sample specification, material approvals, inspection criteria and any document requirements in the quotation. If a live walkthrough or site visit is important, request it through the contact team and confirm the permitted scope in advance.
